Hey moms! I'm a maternity and newborn photographer based in Midland, TX. I know figuring out what to wear for your maternity photos can be daunting, but I'm here to help. Here are some of my top tips to make sure you look and feel amazing during your session. Remember, this is just a preview. Choose a Flattering Silhouette for Your Maternity Photos
This is the most crucial tip. If you stop reading after this, you'll still have the most important info! You want a dress that creates a beautiful silhouette. Here’s what to look for:
- Tight Up Top: A dress or top that's fitted just above the belly helps define your shape.
- Flowy Skirt: Choose a dress or skirt that flares out just above the belly. Avoid tight-fitting skirts under the belly. A flowy skirt adds movement and looks more flattering.
- Floor Length: A dress that reaches the floor looks romantic and elegant. If you prefer a midi-length to show off your shoes, that works too. Just avoid anything too long that you might trip on (unless you are going for that dramatic dress-in-the-air shot).
For the main part of the session, these are the styles I love best. You can always bring another outfit for variety!
What Color Should You Wear?
Your maternity photo session is all about showcasing that beautiful bump. Avoid dark colors like black or navy, as they hide the bump. Bright neon colors can be too harsh. Light to medium colors work best. Think soft pastels, blush tones, and gentle hues that highlight your glow.
What Fabric Should You Wear for Maternity Photos?
Fabric choice is often overlooked, but it’s super important! The best fabrics are gauze, crepe, polyester, and rayon all have a lovely flow that looks great in photos. Lace adds a beautiful texture. Choose fabrics that move well and have a nice drape.
Dress for the Season
If you're having an outdoor session, consider the weather:
- Hot Weather: Choose breathable fabrics.
- Cold Weather: Opt for long-sleeved dresses or bring a chunky knit cardigan. Chunky knits look great off the shoulder and keep you warm between shots.
- Wind: We are in West Texas... we are bound to get some wind. Don't wear anything that will show something you don't intend to show.
What Should Your Spouse or Kids Wear?
Coordinate, but don’t match. You want everyone to complement each other without blending together. Choose complementary colors and avoid identical outfits. Pinterest is a great resource for finding complementary color schemes.
Bring an Extra Maternity Outfit
Variety is the spice of life! Bringing another outfit can add diversity to your photos. Options include a lacy cardigan over underwear, casual overalls, a crop top with jeans for a Calvin Kelin look, or a second dress. Let me know your preferences so we can plan accordingly.
